Analyze and propose collaborative solutions for the Latin American labor market.

With the challenge of promoting a debate for the search of collaborative solutions, the virtual seminar "The Heterogeneity of Labor Markets in Latin America" was held, an instance in which the deep gaps and differences that exist in the labor markets in the region were analyzed.

The initiative evidenced the analysis carried out by the partner institutions of the Erasmus+ LATWORK Project: "Developing Research and Innovation Capacities of Latinamerican HEI for the Analysis of Informal Labour Market", through the observation developed by the Working Group Number 3 which is coordinated by the Universidad Nacional del Litoral of Argentina, the Universidad Federal de Campina Grande of Brazil and the Universiidad San Sebastián of Chile.

It focuses on the ways and processes by which formal work is being replaced by a wide range of informal, intermittent, precarious and atypical jobs, especially in the midst of the current health crisis.

Ana María Calderón Jaramillo, VCM academic of the Faculty of Psychology and coordinator of the project at Universidad San Sebastián, said "We are currently developing several initiatives to transversalize the reflection on informality. We are advancing in basic and applied research. On the one hand, we are investigating the characterization of women's informality and on the other hand, we are working together with the Federal University of Campina Grande in the characterization of informality by platform in the Lakes Region, incorporating social innovation in the formalization strategies of these entrepreneurs".

One of the speakers, Dr. Juan Pablo Pérez, FLACSO researcher, stated that the pandemic crisis "is strengthening the precariousness of employment trends and new forms of informality. Self-employment has decreased during this period and in the future it is suggested that one of the most important labor dynamics could be intermittent employment".

The expert added that there was a recovery of employment after the worst period of the pandemic in this matter, but a preliminary study that is going to come out in the ILO labor outlook, points out that "two thirds of the jobs have managed to recover, although this has a clear gender bias, because in the case of men it is 77% of the jobs, while for women the figure is only 58%."

The Erasmus+ LATWORK Project is implemented by the Directorate of Employability and Graduates and the Directorate of International Relations of Universidad San Sebastián, who consider the discussion on the labor market and professional development a priority in order to strengthen the support processes for students and graduates.

María José Riffo, Director of the Latwork Project at Universidad San Sebastián states that "this type of initiative allows us to be more alert to the national and international panorama, becoming especially relevant to generate strategies to reduce the increase in informality figures as a result of the pandemic and the setback that this has meant for the labor force".
